Pherusa of Family Flabelligeridae

Type species: Amphitrite plumosa Müller 1776

Diagnosis of Pherusa : Flabelligerid with body inflated anteriorly, tapering to narrow posterior end. Cephalic cage well developed, formed by noto- and neurochaetae of first 1-6 chaetigers. Epithelial papillae usually present, integument often covered with sand and debris. Notochaetae crossbarred capillaries. Neurochaetae cross barred capillaries only in cephalic cage, and subsequently including simple uni- or bidentate hooks. Head with pair of grooved palps, 2-3 cushion-shaped oral lips, and curved or semi-circular dorsal cephalic hood bearing numerous small branchial filaments; lateral margins of branchial arc sometimes spiraled inward.
