Original description of Spirobranchus cariniferus

Original name (Basionym): Vermetus cariniferus Gray 1843

Described from: New Zealand

Type locality: Parengarenga

Remarks: The type probably doesn't exist (Glasby & Read 1998) but a figure of it was published later in Smith (1874). The full text in Gray is: "Shell thick, irregularly twisted, opake [sic] white, with a high compressed wavy-keel along the upper edge; mouth orbicular, with a tooth above it, formed by the keel. Operculum orbicular, horny."
