 Habitat: Intertidal. Rocky shore. Sheltered to open beaches. Loose sediments of crevices Infaunal. Depth range: 0-? (m). Salinity regime: Harbour-like variation. Microhabitat:  Rock crevices, old pholad burrows. Tube: No definite tube.
Occurrence:  Common. Density: 1000 (m2).
Distribution in NZ: New Zealand wide
 Feeding guild: Surface deposit-feeding/herbivore.
 Diagnosis:  Genus Neoleprea in Family Terebellidae.
Neoleprea with 2 pairs of branched branchiae, with 22-24 pairs of notopodia from segment 3 (chaetiger 1, 2nd branchiferous), with neuropodial uncini from segment 5 (chaetiger 3), in double rows from segment 11 (7th uncigerous). Nephridial papilla on chaetiger 1, genital papillae on chaetiger 4-6 (VENTRAL and close to notopodium) In life body is reddish-brown with abdomen flecked with white (fide Hutchings & Smith & also GBR (Morton & Miller: "bright red with yellowish tail")). Branchiae are pink to yellow, tentacles pale. (Note: apparent colours may vary considerably if gravid with yellow eggs/sperm). Colour:  Maximum size: 120 mm total length, 3 mm body width.
 Notable aspect: Large size, no tube, 2 pairs of branchiae.
 Comparisons:  Pseudopista rostrata and Terebella plagiostoma both have three pairs of gills, not two. Nicolea armilla has notopodia from segment 4 and its genital papillae are DORSAL to notochaetae.
 Taxonomy:  In Morton and Miller as a Terebella sp.
 Distribution: Endemic. Not recorded outside of New Zealand
 Biology: Soft-bodied large terebellid found coiled in cavities within sediment loosely held with mucus.
