Habitat: | Intertidal. Rocky shore. Sheltered to open beaches. mud to fine sand Infaunal. Depth range: 0-100 (m). Salinity regime: Harbour-like variation. Microhabitat: In sediment between/under boulders, and packing crevices. Tube: Often no tube built? May occupy serpulid tubes, mud tubes etc. | |||
Occurrence: | Consistently occurring, sometimes common. Density: 100 (m2).
Distribution in NZ: Widespread. | |||
Feeding guild: | Surface deposit-feeding/herbivore. | |||
Diagnosis: | Genus Pseudopista in Family Terebellidae.
Pseudopista with dichotomously branched branchiae (3 pairs). Notopodia from segment 4 (last branchiferous), continuing for 21 segments. Neuropodia from chaetiger 2 (segment 5). Nephridial papillae on segment 3, then chaetiger 1-2 (and small till 5), ventral to notopodial lobe or branchia. Anterior uncini with typically posteriorly elongated bases.In life chocolate-brown with red branchiae, pink tentacles (Note: apparent colour may vary if gravid with eggs/sperm). No tube, or mud tube. Colour: Maximum size: 70 mm total length, 4 mm body width. |

Comparisons: | See Terebella plagiostoma, also a smallish species with 3 branchial pairs | |||
Taxonomy: | The monotypic genus is close to Pista and Amphitrite. Pseudopista rostrata may be junior synonym of Longicarpus modestus (= Terebella modesta Quatrefage, 1865) described from Australia (fide C. Glasby unpublished). | |||
Distribution: | Endemic. Possibly also Australia (as Longicarpus modestus) | |||
Biology: | Appears to tolerate a variety of conditions and habitats, but little else is known. | |||
